From a young age, Kyle dreamed of playing college basketball. Full of determination and drive, he spent all his time working to improve his game. Kyle was blessed with some tremendous coaches along the way who inspired him to push through pain and adversity, and to never give up on his dreams.
Kyle excelled in high school, both academically and athletically. He still holds every 3-point FG record at his alma mater, South Salem High School. He coaches there now too. His hard work paid off when he signed with Concordia University to play basketball. He was also accepted to their very competitive nursing program.
Kyle’s college debut proved frustrating. He was unusually tired, and despite putting in gym time, he was not seeing results. He just felt “off.” He moved home and transferred to Chemeketa Community College for his second year of school. He pushed through fatigue, painful headaches and unusual sensations (that were later determined to be seizures) so that he could continue playing basketball.
When he went to the doctor, everything changed. A tumor the size of a softball was lodged in the very center of his brain. He was quickly sent to Oregon Health & Science University’s neurosurgery team. They saved his life... and told him he would not play competitive basketball again.
Perspective is hard to teach and even harder to learn. After his first surgery, Kyle’s focus shifted from dribbling up and down a basketball court to learning to maneuver a wheelchair. With the help of an incredible physical therapist, he graduated from a wheelchair to a walker to a cane to a half-marathon.
Kyle has setbacks and challenges, but his commitment to a positive attitude is unmatched. Drawing on his personal successes and failures, Kyle seeks to challenge others to be the best versions of themselves. Follow Kyle on his journey and learn how to look at life with perspective. His story is one of struggle, hope, perseverance and love.
